SUMMARY:Sasquatch: Man\, Ape or Myth by David George Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Northwest\, people have been reporting encounters with the Sasquatch—a hairy\, eight- to ten-foot-tall hominid—for hundreds of years. Yet aside from a collection of large footprint casts and a sizable assemblage of eyewitness accounts\, some attributable to the earliest humans in the Northwest\, no scientifically accepted evidence has been offered to establish this being’s existence. \nAuthor David George Gordon evaluates the data gathered about the legendary Northwest icon\, discusses the rules of critical thinking and the workings of the scientific method\, and explains how one can become an effective “citizen scientist” by gathering credible evidence that can be used to substantiate the Sasquatch’s status as either Man-Ape or Myth. Attendees are encouraged to tell their tales and share their experiences with this mysterious creature. \nDavid George Gordon   \nDavid George Gordon is the author of The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual: Using Citizen Science to Uncover North America’s Most Elusive Creature. An accomplished science communicator\, he has spoken at the American Museum of Natural History\, The Philadelphia Academy of Sciences\, Yale University\, the Smithsonian Institution\, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums in San Francisco\, Hollywood\, and Times Square.  He has been interviewed by National Geographic\, Time\, The New York Times\, and The Wall Street Journal\, and appeared as a guest on television shows that include The Late Late Show With James Corden\, The View\, and ABC’s Nightline.

SUMMARY:Lost Liners of the Pacific Northwest
DESCRIPTION:While the Mosquito Fleet is the prominent symbol of Puget Sound’s maritime\nhistory\, the region was also the base for fleets of coastal and ocean liners. Often smaller\nand sometimes less glamorous than their Atlantic counterparts\, these ‘pocket liners’\nlinked the ports of Washington and British Columbia to Alaska\, California\, Hawaii\, and\nJapan\, creating both routes for commerce and travel\, and even for sightseeing. But like\nthe Atlantic liners\, these ships were also subject to dramatic and deadly mishaps and\nwrecks. From the wreck of the State of California to the burning of the Congress\, Erik\nKosick will take you through several wrecks\, highlighting their careers and ends with\nartifacts and personal anecdotes of life onboard and survival. \nMeet your speaker… \nErik Kosick graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Arts in\nHistory and has worked and volunteered at the Washington State Historical Society\nsince 2016. Passionate about Pacific Northwest/Alaska maritime history\, Erik is\ncurrently working on a decade-long project on the 1904 S.S. Clallam wreck\, but is also\nworking on smaller publications. He has also done public speaking tours on the wreck\nfrom Tacoma to Victoria\, and has also consulted on historical accuracy for Jean\nPaekau’s murder mystery novel The Sinking of Souls.

SUMMARY:Digging Deep: Resurrecting the Snohomish Pioneer Cemetery with Taylor Russell
DESCRIPTION:In 1998\, a judge declared Snohomish County’s first cemetery “lost and forgotten.” Its not-so-permanent residents had been divided by a highway\, unearthed and reinterred at other cemeteries\, or—worse yet—left in place but without their headstone. Over 60 headstones had gone missing from the site since its founding in 1876\, and for much of its history\, no burial records were kept. Yet over 300 of the county’s earliest pioneers were laid to rest there—all with interesting life stories. Join Taylor Russell of SnohomishWalks as she shares her journey of piecing together the most accurate (and biographical) burial list to date using archives and digital research tool. \nTaylor Russell is a local historian and writer. She is passionate about sharing history in authentic\, experiential ways. Learn more about her books and walking tours at SnohomishWalks.com

SUMMARY:Saturday Morning Program - UFO Northwest: How Washington State Spawned the Men In Black
DESCRIPTION:On August 1\, 1947\, the tragic crash of a B-25 bomber in Washington State triggered an FBI investigation of “The Maury Island Incident”—an infamous Northwest UFO sighting\, and history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called “Men in Black.” \nThe FBI’s records from 1947\, which were sealed for decades\, reveal Cold War fears\, jurisdictional disputes\, cover-ups\, false confessions\, a courageous FBI Special Agent\, and the hands-on involvement of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. \nRelying on the FBI records\, this talk exposes a Washington story that shapes our current UFO narratives\, from 1950’s pulp magazines to the ubiquitous X-Files and Men in Black film franchises. Also examined: how the Northwest’s unique position in UFO history is challenged by others that assert contradictory narratives. \nSteve Edmiston (he/him) is a business and entertainment lawyer with Bracepoint Law\, and an indie film screenwriter and producer. Edmiston has keynoted for the Pacific Northwest History Conference\, Washington State Historical Museum\, McMenamins History Pubs\, film festivals\, conferences\, and business groups. He was the screenwriter and co-producer of “The Maury Island Incident\,” a short film chronicling the true story of Harold Dahl and his alleged 1947 sighting of a UFO over Puget Sound.

SUMMARY:“A Nose for News: Sniffing Out Stories in Newspapers” by Mary Kircher Roddy\, CG\, CGG
