SUMMARY:Sasquatch: Man\, Ape or Myth by David George Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Northwest\, people have been reporting encounters with the Sasquatch—a hairy\, eight- to ten-foot-tall hominid—for hundreds of years. Yet aside from a collection of large footprint casts and a sizable assemblage of eyewitness accounts\, some attributable to the earliest humans in the Northwest\, no scientifically accepted evidence has been offered to establish this being’s existence. \nAuthor David George Gordon evaluates the data gathered about the legendary Northwest icon\, discusses the rules of critical thinking and the workings of the scientific method\, and explains how one can become an effective “citizen scientist” by gathering credible evidence that can be used to substantiate the Sasquatch’s status as either Man-Ape or Myth. Attendees are encouraged to tell their tales and share their experiences with this mysterious creature. \nDavid George Gordon   \nDavid George Gordon is the author of The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual: Using Citizen Science to Uncover North America’s Most Elusive Creature. An accomplished science communicator\, he has spoken at the American Museum of Natural History\, The Philadelphia Academy of Sciences\, Yale University\, the Smithsonian Institution\, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums in San Francisco\, Hollywood\, and Times Square.  He has been interviewed by National Geographic\, Time\, The New York Times\, and The Wall Street Journal\, and appeared as a guest on television shows that include The Late Late Show With James Corden\, The View\, and ABC’s Nightline.

SUMMARY:Lost Liners of the Pacific Northwest
DESCRIPTION:While the Mosquito Fleet is the prominent symbol of Puget Sound’s maritime\nhistory\, the region was also the base for fleets of coastal and ocean liners. Often smaller\nand sometimes less glamorous than their Atlantic counterparts\, these ‘pocket liners’\nlinked the ports of Washington and British Columbia to Alaska\, California\, Hawaii\, and\nJapan\, creating both routes for commerce and travel\, and even for sightseeing. But like\nthe Atlantic liners\, these ships were also subject to dramatic and deadly mishaps and\nwrecks. From the wreck of the State of California to the burning of the Congress\, Erik\nKosick will take you through several wrecks\, highlighting their careers and ends with\nartifacts and personal anecdotes of life onboard and survival. \nMeet your speaker… \nErik Kosick graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Arts in\nHistory and has worked and volunteered at the Washington State Historical Society\nsince 2016. Passionate about Pacific Northwest/Alaska maritime history\, Erik is\ncurrently working on a decade-long project on the 1904 S.S. Clallam wreck\, but is also\nworking on smaller publications. He has also done public speaking tours on the wreck\nfrom Tacoma to Victoria\, and has also consulted on historical accuracy for Jean\nPaekau’s murder mystery novel The Sinking of Souls.

SUMMARY:Digging Deep: Resurrecting the Snohomish Pioneer Cemetery with Taylor Russell
DESCRIPTION:In 1998\, a judge declared Snohomish County’s first cemetery “lost and forgotten.” Its not-so-permanent residents had been divided by a highway\, unearthed and reinterred at other cemeteries\, or—worse yet—left in place but without their headstone. Over 60 headstones had gone missing from the site since its founding in 1876\, and for much of its history\, no burial records were kept. Yet over 300 of the county’s earliest pioneers were laid to rest there—all with interesting life stories. Join Taylor Russell of SnohomishWalks as she shares her journey of piecing together the most accurate (and biographical) burial list to date using archives and digital research tool. \nTaylor Russell is a local historian and writer. She is passionate about sharing history in authentic\, experiential ways. Learn more about her books and walking tours at SnohomishWalks.com

SUMMARY:“UFO Northwest - How the Washington State Spawned the Men in Black” By Steve Edmiston
DESCRIPTION:On August 1\, 1947\, the tragic crash of a B-25 bomber in Washington State triggered an FBI investigation of “The Maury Island Incident”—an infamous Northwest UFO sighting\, and history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called “Men in Black.”  \nThe FBI’s records from 1947\, which were sealed for decades\, reveal Cold War fears\, jurisdictional disputes\, cover-ups\, false confessions\, a courageous FBI Special Agent\, and the hands-on involvement of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.  \nRelying on the FBI records\, this talk exposes a Washington story that shapes our current UFO narratives\, from 1950’s pulp magazines to the ubiquitous X-Files and Men in Black film franchises. Also examined: how the Northwest’s unique position in UFO history is challenged by others that assert contradictory narratives.  \n\nSpeaker Bio\nSteve Edmiston (he/him) is a business and entertainment lawyer with Bracepoint Law\, and an indie film screenwriter and producer. Edmiston has keynoted for the Pacific Northwest History Conference\, Washington State Historical Museum\, McMenamins History Pubs\, film festivals\, conferences\, and business groups. He was the screenwriter and co-producer of “The Maury Island Incident\,” a short film chronicling the true story of Harold Dahl and his alleged 1947 sighting of a UFO over Puget Sound.

SUMMARY:“Fast Girls: Trailblazing Women Olympians” by Elise Hooper
DESCRIPTION:At the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam\, Betty Robinson\, a seventeen-year-old student from Chicago\, won a gold medal in the inaugural offering of women’s track and field. Three years later as she prepared to defend her title at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles\, she was in a plane crash and believed to be dead until the mortician noticed her breathing and she was revived. Doctors told Robinson she’d be lucky to walk again and advised her to give up her Olympic aspirations. Yet at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin\, she was back on the podium with another gold medal.   \nBetty Robinson represents one of many fascinating but overlooked pioneering women Olympians. In this talk\, author Elise Hooper separates fact from fiction to uncover the progress and setbacks faced by women Olympians since they first began competing in 1900.  \n\nSpeaker Bio\nElise Hooper (she/her) spent several years writing for television and online news outlets before getting a Master of Arts and teaching high-school literature and history. Her debut novel The Other Alcott was a nominee for the 2017 Washington Book Award. Three more novels—Learning to See\, Fast Girls\, and Angels of the Pacific—followed\, all centered on the lives of extraordinary but overlooked historical women.

SUMMARY:Community Program: Sinking of the Clallam
DESCRIPTION:The Woodinville Heritage Society would like to invite you\, your family and friends\, to our next FREE Community Program\, “Sinking of the Clallam.” This event takes place on Saturday\, October 19th\, 10:00am to 11:30am at the Brightwater Education Center\, 22505 State Route 9 (Woodinville-Snohomish Rd)\, just north of Costco. \n\nIn the storm-wracked early hours of January 9\, 1904\, the steamship Clallam sank in the Strait of Juan de Fuca\, claiming the lives of at least 56 people\, nearly all of them passengers. The jewel of the Seattle-Victoria run\, the ship was not even a year old. While a scandalized British Columbia dubbed her the ‘Coffin Ship’\, the Clallam was not an anomaly in the North American steamship trade. The wreck’s aftermath exposed an environment that would alarm both sides of the border. \nErik Kosick\, History B.A.\, Pacific Lutheran University\, has researched the tragedy for over a decade\, and will take you through Clallam’s short life and her final voyage. Through rarely seen photographs\, artifacts and accounts of Clallam’s passengers and crew\, you will see how this nearly forgotten shipwreck created a watershed moment in the Pacific Northwest’s maritime industry.

SUMMARY:Community Program: Atomic Washington - Our Nuclear Past\, Present\, & Future
DESCRIPTION:At the center of every nuclear weapon in the United States is a small pit of radioactive material manufactured at a top-secret facility in Eastern  Washington\, a facility which today remains the most radiologically contaminated site in the Western hemisphere. \nBut Washington State’s role in the nuclear era ranges far beyond the construction\, operation\, and ongoing cleanup of the Hanford nuclear reservation. Today\, Washington has two operating nuclear reactors\, one of which provides us with ten percent of our electricity. Radioactive substances are used in our state to cure diseases\, build airplanes\, detect pollutants\, and power smoke detectors. Further\, Naval Base Kitsap has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons deployed anywhere in the country. \nDrawing from history\, science\, and popular culture\, author Steve Olson reveals the many influences of nuclear materials on Washington State\, and the many ways in which our state has been a pioneer in the atomic age. \nSteve Olson (he/him) is a writer who most recently authored The Apocalypse Factory: Plutonium and the Making of the Atomic Age. His books have been nominated in several local and national book awards. Since 1979\, he has been a consultant writer for the National Academy of Sciences\, the President’s\nCouncil of Advisors on Science and Technology\, and other national scientific organizations. Raised in Eastern Washington\, Olson now lives in Seattle.

SUMMARY:Community Program: “The Story of the Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway”
DESCRIPTION:Operating for 29 years\, the Seattle-Everett Interurban Trolley traveled over 29 miles of rail carrying passengers and freight to nearly 30 stops along it’s line. In the first decade of the 1900’s the Boston electrical engineering firm of Stone and Webster had designs of building an interurban electric railway system that would eventually connect Olympia\, Washington and Vancouver\, British Columbia. To start the north link\, they purchased the Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway Company from Fred E. Sander in 1908. \nSister and brother authors Cheri Ryan and Kevin Stadler grew up in the community of Alderwood Manor\, once an important stop on the interurban route. Both are members of the Lynnwood-Alderwood Manor Heritage Association and have done extensive research of the area. Ryan is a member of the City of Lynnwood History and Heritage Board and Snohomish County Historic Preservation Commission and Stadler is on the board of the Woodinville Heritage Society as well as the League of Snohomish County Heritage Organizations. \nThey have gathered numerous images that tell the story of the early railway running between Seattle and Everett. These images have been gathered from variety of sources; over which half have come from the estate of Walter V. Shannon who was the last surviving motorman from the Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway.

SUMMARY:Community Program: "After the Blast: Mount St. Helens 40 Years Later"
DESCRIPTION:On May 18\, 1980\, the world watched in awe as Mount St. Helens erupted\, killing 57 people and causing hundreds of square miles of destruction. Everyone thought it would take ages for life to return to the mountain\, but scientists who visited soon after were stunned to find plants sprouting up through the ash and animals skittering around downed trees. \nEcologists have since spent decades studying life’s resilience in the face of seemingly total devastation. Through their work\, the eruption of Mount St. Helens has become known as the greatest natural experiment in Pacific Northwest history. In his talk\, Eric Wagner takes you on a journey through the blast zone. He explores not just the surprising ways plants and animals survived the eruption\, but also the complex roles that people have played\, all while showing how fascinating Mount St. Helens still is 40 years after the blast. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Program: "Lost Roadhouses of Seattle"
DESCRIPTION:The Woodinville Heritage Society is offering a free community program on “Lost Roadhouses of Seattle” presented by local historians\, Brad Holden and Peter Blecha. \nWashington state prohibited alcohol in 1916\, four years prior to a national ban. Prohibition resulted in a network of roadside inns\, taverns and dance halls just outside Seattle’s city limits operating well into the 1950’s. Several roadhouses existed along two stretches of highway\, Bothell Highway and Highway 99. Among these establishments providing illicit entertainment were the Green Mill\, Jolly Roger and Parkers Bothell Highway Pavilion. Holden and Blecha will tell the story of these forbidden nightclubs. \nAuthor\, Historian\, Finder of Old Things: when not out searching for local historical artifacts\, Brad Holden enjoys writing about the more illicit side of Seattle’s past. He is a columnist for Seattle Magazine\, is a contributing writer for HistoryLink.org (an online encyclopedia of Washington state history) and his work has also appeared in the Seattle Times. Holden has been profiled on KIRO and KOMO news\, Seattle Refined\, NPR\, King 5 Evening! and various publications. His trilogy of books related to local Prohibition history – including his latest book\, Lost Roadhouses – are available online and at bookstores everywhere. He lives in Edmonds\, WA. \nPeter Blecha is a Staff Historian with HistoryLink.org\, the Director of the Northwest Music Archives\, and an award-winning author. A member of the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild\, and former longtime Senior Curator at Seattle’s EMP music museum\, Blecha has been acknowledged as: “the premier expert in his chosen field of research” (Seattle Weekly\, 1988); “Seattle’s best-known collector” (Scram Magazine\, 2006); the “Indiana Jones of Rock ‘n’ Roll” (The Rocket\, 2000); and a writer who “deserves a place in Northwest music history for his important role in preserving its history and promoting its legacy” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer).
